For example in the testfire the attackers were both yellow and blue, so put them on a team together and make their color green. Perhaps another solution is pairing the attackers together and making their color a mix of the team’s colors. A better solution is to make maps specifically for Tricolor Turf War, along with those maps in question having a base for the defending team. No new maps were made for Tricolor Turf War Splatoon maps can be pretty hit and miss already, but when designed for two teams in specific, adding a third team doesn’t work. While there are many possible solutions to this problem, the greatest one is the maps. The main gameplay loop of Splatoon is solid enough to not warrant a sequel unless many new features are added, so having a core selling point of this game being inaccessible is awful. Splatoon 3 Splatfest World Premiere Promotional Art. This is greatly disheartening because Splatoon 3 heavily relies on the Tricolor Turf Wars as it’s reason to exist, so much so there’s promotional art just for the one mode (pictured below.) Many people were unable to play even one round. This solution didn’t make the players happy though, as now the game had officially come out and many people (myself included) didn’t participate in the testfire and wanted to try a Tricolor Turf War. Nintendo decided to decrease the frequency of Tricolor Turf Wars to combat the poor state they were in. Since the next Splatfest was in a month, there wasn’t a lot of time to fix the Tricolor Turf War. This led to the defenders of the testfire Splatfest losing, with lots of anger in the community. When you don’t have a homebase, you lose. Inking or not inking the homebase is essential to winning. In the Splatoon community it’s an inside joke about the importance of inking the base, because quite frankly the homebase is important. There are many reasons for this, such as the defenders being unable to get the sprinkler of doom or lacking a homebase. However, during the testfire Splatfest, gameplay was incredibly unbalanced. The defenders have to defend an object called “Ultra Signal.” The more the attackers hold the Ultra Signal, the more it charges up when charged the attackers get the “sprinkler of doom.” The defenders are placed in the middle of the map, with the attackers on the other two sides. It’s a turf war with the attackers of two different teams being on the same team, and the defenders are by themselves. This leads to a total of 8 players, like every other mode. The defending team has 4 members, whilst the attackers have two from each team. whichever team is winning at halftime becomes the defenders, whilst the other two teams take the offensive. The gamemode becomes available after the halftime report. However, Splatoon 3 created the Tricolor Turf Wars to include all three teams at once. This was quite easy to handle and it meant around 50% of players would be satisfied with the results, as half would win. Perhaps the biggest sell of Splatoon 3 was the Tricolor Turf War, as in the past both Splatoon 1 and Splatoon 2 had a simple two team fight. Splatoon 3 so far has had two Splatfests, the testfire Splatfest of Rock, Paper, Scissors, along with the first official Splatfest of “What would you bring to a deserted island?” With answers of gear, grub, and fun. The players then pick a side, and quite literally fight for it. A Splatfest is when the idols of each game’s main band pose a question and every idol picks an answer. The fanbase, however, truly awakens during the Splatfests. There are also now three idols (as opposed to traditionally having two idols), which means three teams for Splatfests.Īll Splatoon games live and die by their Splatfests the campaign is fun and the regular multiplayer is fun. Instead of the main character being named Agent 5 like expected, they’re named Agent 3, with the protagonist of the first game now being named Captain 3. The developers decided to create the game around the number three itself. It would be a hard sell, especially during such a rough time economically. This meant Splatoon would have two main games on the same system with the same type of gameplay and battles. Splatoon, while being a relatively new series, had followed this formula until Splatoon 3 was announced for the Nintendo Switch on February 17th, 2021. There is no console with two Smash Brothers games, no system with two Mario Kart games, etc… When it comes to competitive games, Nintendo typically puts out one from a franchise on each system. Splatoon 3, unlike most competitive multiplayer nintendo games, had to prove it has a right to exist.
